Population
According to census in 1991, the town has 43.043
inhabitants while Municipality of Kikinda has 68.915, of various nations
and nationalities, mainly Serbs.

Geographical
location
Municipality of Kikinda is in North Banat, taking
area of 782 square km or 3,6 AP Vojvodina area. It has five bordering
municipalities and Country of Romania. North and northwest is Coka;
southwest are Novi Becej, south Zrenjanin and Zitiste, southeast Nova
Crnja, east and northeast Romania border.
Kikinda is halfway from Szeged to Zrenjanin.
General
characteristics
In the former Yugoslavia Municipality of Kikinda was
among the most developed ones, with high level of cultural and sports
life. Last ten years have brought catastrophic fall down, first of all
in economy, which caused fall down in other segments of life. Population
is mixed mainly the Serbs. National relations are traditionally good.
Local government consists of parties, which are opposite to republic
government.

Agriculture
Basic branch of economy in the
Municipality of Kikinda is agriculture, with its 59.817 hectares of
arable land. Annual production of wheat is about 60.000 tons, 114.670
tons, sunflower seeds 12.409 tons, soya 9.608 tons and sugar beat 50.559
tons, and also various vegetables and fruits.

Industrial production includes
production of oil derivation DD ‘’Naftagas’’
branch in Kikinda, industry for metal processing, machine tools, special
tools, car parts and flexible technologies DD

Tourism
Hunting tourism is developed in Kikinda
Municipality. Facilities for tourists – hotel
‘’Narvik’’, the only
‘’A’’ category hotel in Vojvodina.
Others
Other branches of economy are crafts,
building industry, trade, catering industry, traffic and connections.
Crafts in Kikinda have lost their importance in the last ten years,
although they are starting all over again now. There are six
construction enterprises in the Municipality of Kikinda:
‘’Elektron’’,
‘’Mozaik’’, ‘’Radnik’’,
‘’Kikinda’’, ‘’Severni
Banat’’ and ‘’Nas stan’’. Trade is
important with numerous social or private firms. Catering includes seven
social and many private facilities. Road, railroad, water traffic as
well as postal and telecommunication services developed.

Sports Facilities
Kikinda Municipality has 51 sport clubs registered
with all types of sports (football, handball, athletics, basketball,
table tennis, tennis and others).
Sport facilities are: 11 football playgrounds, sport-leisure center
with indoor and outdoor swimming pools and sport hall.
Cultural activities
Cultural activities are mainly covered
by 5 institutions: National Theatre, Library, National Museum, Historic
Archive and Youth Club. There are two associations for cherishing art
and culture Gusle and Edjseg.
Societies,Associations and Clubs
Besides the above, there are various
and numerous societies, associations and clubs which are very active.
The most important is Association of small economies in help small and
medium enterprises develop, ‘’Green place’’ for
ecology, ‘’Zar’’ – association for women,
‘’Distrikt’’ – association for the
nourishment of the town’s traditions.
Historical
Connections
From 1776 to 1876 Kikinda was military,
administrative and political center and economic center of Big Kikinda
District. When the District was abolished it was added to Toronal region
and thus reduced to municipality. After the First World War its
geographic importance diminished due to political and administrative
changes as the region was divided among Yugoslavia, Romania and Hungary.
Important persons: J.Popovic, M.Antic, D.Vasiljev – writers,
R.Trnic – national hero.

We expect the future partner to be similar to Kikinda in the
tradition and cultural development.
Existing
arrangements and/or permanent relationships
Kikinda maintains relations with many towns in the
country and abroad. It is in brotherhood with NASARET ILIT in Israel. We
have excellent relations with Timisoara, town in neighbouring Romania.

We expect cultural co-operation, co-operation between the sport clubs
as well as economic co-operation.
