Geographical location

It is situated in the Northwest part of Vojvodina, region of the Western Backa. Distances from Belgrade – 135 km, Wienn – 350 km, Budapest – 220 km.

General characteristics

Sombor municipality is a multinational community, which covers the area of 1.200 square kilometres. The average height above see level is 90 meters. There are 15 settlement and 16 farms in the whole area and Sombor is the centre of district. It is a part of the mild Backa plain surrounded by the river Danube to the West. Sombor municipality is a very interesting region.

Agriculture

Municipality occupies the land of 108.000 ha used for agriculture (53% of this arable land is private property) high quality of soil enables crop farming wheat, corn, sunflower, sugar beet, etc.

Industries

1. Food industry ( The oil and vegetable fat mill ‘’Sunce’’, the dairy plant ‘’Somboled’’, the cooling plant, the mill plant, the food manufacturers ‘’Panonka’’, which are all processing agricultural raw materials from seeds supplied by ‘’SEME – SOMBOR’’.)

2. Metalworking plant ‘’BANE’’, the battery charger manufacturers ‘’SOMBOR’’, the Delivery Van Manufacturers ‘’CRVENA ZASTAVA’’, leather and shoe manufacturers, woodworking, printing and textile plants.

3. Handicraft production – state and privately owned companies.

Tourism

1. With the river Danube in its vicinity, a Brancy canal system and rich woods, as well as good traffic lines, Sombor has developed fishery and hunting, including first wild game.
2. The municipality of Sombor offers all sorts of tourist services with its cultural centers and historical monuments.

Great attention is paid to health protection – there is a medical center ‘’Dr Radivoj Simonovic’’, surgery block, a sanatorium of the Bezdan spa, a psychiatric hospital, etc.

Historical Connections

Sombor was founded in XIV century. In 1541 Ottomans conquered it. In 1678 it acquired the status of a ‘’border area’’. The Austrian Empress gave to Sombor in 1749. The status and all rights of a ‘’free city belonging to the Empire’’. Important cultural centers and historical monuments are: the Pasha’s Tower – the oldest building from the past, the National Theatre (built in 1882), the City Library (built in 1859), the City Museum (1883), the City Hall (1842), the St. George Church and the Trinity Church, the Gallery ‘’Milan Konjevic’’. Sombor is famous for its writers – Laza Kostic and Veljko Petrovic, painter Milan Konjovic, composer Petar Konjovic and others.
